Project Summary

OVERVIEW
This report was the culmination of research and due diligence activities that assessed patterns, trends, and policies in support of the 2021 Coastal Dynamics Studio in partnership with Lenoir County, NC. Specifically, the study was undertaken to provide baseline inventory and overview of environmental, demographic, and climatic conditions in Lenoir County. The goal was to synthesize information to inform and inspire novel approaches to disaster recovery and response. The final document not only supported students, but built local consensus toward: i) identifying known and anticipated future hazards; and ii) developing design and planning strategies to improve the health, safety, and well-being of community residents.

Financial support for the research activities and preparation of the documentation was provided by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The audience for resulting student work was Lenoir County Emergency Management as well as reviewers at State and Federal levels of government, such as the North Carolina Office of Recovery and Resiliency (NCORR) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
